BHYC offers the whole scope of CANSail programming with an emphasis on learning practical skills on the water.  Our Youth program offers a safe, fun and active learning environment, with relatively less time spent in a classroom. Sailors learn the skills and enter into fun and challenging experiences suited to their age and stage of development.  Our programming is designed to get – and keep – sailors excited about sailing for life!


The 6 CANSail levels promote progressive teaching and learning of core dinghy sailing skills.  Choose one that is the best fit for you:

CANSail Wet Feet

CANSail Wet Feet is intended for students aged between 5-8 years old with no sailing experience. Students will be using a very stable dinghy called an Optimist. “Wet Feet” introduces the fun of sailing to younger children.


CANSail 1 & 2

CANSail 1&2 is intended for children aged 8 and older with some or no sailing experience. Prior students with White Sail 1 or White Sail 2 should register in this course. The goal of this level involves fundamental skill acquisition in any type of boat (Optimist Dinghy, CL-14 or the club 420).

Instruction for this program includes: Headings, Proper sail trim, Tacking and Gybing, Righting a capsized boat, Securing tow lines, Launching and dock safely.


CANSail 3 & 4

CANSail 3&4 is intended for students who have completed CANSail 1&2 or have finished White Sail 3 or have some Bronze 4&5. The goal of this level involves applied skill acquisition in any type of boat (single / double handed) that allows them to sail more independent, competently and safely.

Instruction for this program includes: Sailing by the lee, Trimming for maximum speed, Adjusting sail controls, Boat Tuning, Tactics and Laylines, Advanced Boat Handling.

CANSail 5 & 6

CANSail 5&6 is intended for students who have completed CANSail 3&4 or have Bronze 5 or have some Silver/Gold experience. The goal of this level involves applied skill consolidation in any type of boat (single / double handed).

Instruction for this program includes: Tactical mark rounding, Steering to promote surfing, Accelerating off a start line, Tactical defense while racing, Sail wind flow theory, Spinnaker setting & trim, Trapezing and Boat maintenance.




BHYC Racing Team

The BHYC Racing program are for those students who have a competitive edge or just want to test their knowledge against other friends in the racing community. At this level, students learn the racing rules, signals, race management and basic racing tactics. Racing season begins in mid April with pre-season training and runs until Fall.

BHYC Racing offers three options:

OPTI Racing (CANSail 3-6) The goal of this program is for students who want to enhance their racing skills at a young age. For those students who have completed White Sail 2 or are in CANSail levels 3-6. 

Single Handed Racing - Laser/Radial (CANSail 5&6)

Double Handed Racing - 29er/420 (CANSail 5&6)
