Happy New Year and welcome to the 2012 sailing season!  We are celebrating the New Year by introducing your new Board at the Commodore’s Punch Bowl January 22nd.  What I most enjoy about the New Year’s Levee and the Punch Bowl is the optimism a new year brings and the ideas our Members bring to the discussions.

In December we began planning for 2012’s events, race schedules, cruises, maintenance, and of course Budgets.  We will endeavor to communicate our plans and budgets as they are completed and approved.  As in 2011, the goals below outline my plans for the Commodore, some have changed for 2012 while some carry over and continue to evolve:

Accountability

  • Accountability to our financial plans,
  • Return to favourable balance sheet,

Growth

  • Increase participation of Members,
  • Attract actively participating new Members,
  • Promote sport at National/Provincial/Regional level,

Communication

  • Listen and prioritize member’s dreams,
  • Host discussion meetings for challenging topics,
  • Communicate plans and goals,

Regulatory & Policy

  • We all make it home at the end of the day,
  • Draft BHYC policies to document what we do,
  • Compliant to all regulations, bylaws, & legislation,

Board & Club Development

  • Measure progress & success,
  • Promote education of Not for Profit Board Management,
  • Support development of long range plan.

I will speak to these points at the spring general meeting and again at the AGM, however if at anytime you would like to know where we are with any of these goals, please ask anytime.

For policy this month, we drafted an updated Work Party policy.  It may be found in the Members section of our website under Documents & Forms.

Thank you again to Brian Sims and the crew of Usual Suspects for sharing your stories and presenting BHYC with your award for winning the Chicago/Mackinac Race.  Next time you visit the clubhouse check out the new addition bestowed to our Club.

See you at the Club,

Jay Kirkpatrick
